The forest on the plateau consists of acidophylous oak-beech forests. The slope forest habitats are influenced by an aquifer that feeds slope sources. Hydrochemically, the water of this aquifer can be characterized as acid and nutrient poor. The slope displays an acid tolerant vegetation with Sphagnum as well as a more neutrophilic Querceto-Carpinetum. Lower on the slope, also base-rich sources are present, resulting in neutrophylous spring and alluvial forest. \r\nThe research in this LTER-site focuses primarely on ecohydrology of this forest ecosystem, and forest dynamics in two sampling areas (resp. 1ha and 0.5 ha) within the unmanaged strict reserve area in the northern part of the reserve (23 ha).\r\n\r\nconsists of a valley part, a slope part and a plateau part. \r\n","citation":null,"relatedIdentifiers":null,"status":{"label":"Operational","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/elter_cl\/10772"},"yearEstablished":1991,"yearClosed":null,"relatedSites":[{"typeOfRelationship":{"label":"belongs to","uri":"null"},"listOfSites":[{"type":"site","title":"Dijleland - Belgium","id":{"prefix":"https:\/\/deims.org\/","suffix":"7629b584-b8dd-4da5-a4ba-4175bb985673"},"changed":"2023-07-25T08:52:19+0200"}]}],"siteName":"Nature Reserve Rode Forest and Laan Valley","shortName":"Rode Forest","siteType":"Stationary land-based site","protectionLevel":[{"label":"Category IV \u2013 Habitat\/Species Management Area","uri":"http:\/\/dd.eionet.europa.eu\/vocabularyconcept\/cdda\/IucnCategoryValue\/IV"}],"landUse":null,"images":[{"url":"https:\/\/deims.org\/sites\/default\/files\/photos\/nature-reserve-rode-forest-and-laan-valley-belgium_1574.jpg","alt":"not defined"},{"url":"https:\/\/deims.org\/sites\/default\/files\/photos\/nature-reserve-rode-forest-and-laan-valley-belgium_1575.jpg","alt":"not defined"},{"url":"https:\/\/deims.org\/sites\/default\/files\/photos\/nature-reserve-rode-forest-and-laan-valley-belgium_1576.jpg","alt":"not defined"},{"url":"https:\/\/deims.org\/sites\/default\/files\/photos\/nature-reserve-rode-forest-and-laan-valley-belgium_1577.jpg","alt":"not defined"}]},"environmentalCharacteristics":{"airTemperature":{"yearlyAverage":11,"monthlyAverage":null,"unit":"\u00b0C","referencePeriod":null},"precipitation":{"yearlyAverage":764,"monthlyAverage":null,"unit":"mm","referencePeriod":null},"biogeographicalRegion":"atlantic","biome":"deciduous_forest","ecosystemType":[{"label":"Deciduous Forest","uri":null},{"label":"Forest","uri":null}],"eunisHabitat":[{"label":"Acidophilous oak-dominated woodland (G1.8)","uri":null},{"label":"Broadleaved deciduous woodland (G1)","uri":null},{"label":"Broadleaved swamp woodland not on acid peat (G1.4)","uri":null},{"label":"Meso- and eutrophic oak, hornbeam, ash, sycamore, lime, elm and related woodland (G1.A)","uri":null},{"label":"Woodland, forest and other wooded land (G)","uri":null}],"landforms":null,"geoBonBiome":["Terrestrial"],"geology":"tertiary sandstone banks covered with niveo-aeolean quarternary loam.
