The East edge of the area belongs to the Iullemmeden sedimentary basin, Continental-Terminal : Mio-pliocene period Pre-cambrian gneisses, schists and granites. The western edge is part of the plutonic Liptako Gourma massif. The latter is part of the West African craton and consists of extensively weathered pre-cambrian.
