En la regi\u00f3n se encuentran tres \u00e1reas protegidas: la Reserva Estatal El Palmar y la Reserva de la Biosfera R\u00eda Celest\u00fan en el estado de Yucat\u00e1n y la Reserva de la Biosfera de los Petenes en el norte del estado de Campeche. La diversidad de ambientes permite dise\u00f1ar experimentos de largo plazo sobre los efectos de eventos naturales e impactos antr\u00f3picos sobre la estructura y funcionamiento de ecosistemas
