It is situated in the Sz\u0151ll\u0151cske forest reserve area on the southern foothills of B\u00fckk Mountains, NE Hungary. The site is covered by a mature coppice oak forest (105 years old)  with Q. petraea and Q. cerris in  the upper canopy layer and other woody species occurring in the secondary canopy layer and shrub layers (Acer sp., Cornus sp, Euonymus sp., Crataegus sp.)  The site was seriously impacted by oak decline during 1980ies.\r\nThe soil has been classified as a brown forest soil type according to the Hungarian Soil Classification System which corresponds to Luvisol according to FAO WRB.\r\nLong-term data are available on climate, soil variables and forest structural and functional characteristics (for period supply. Two wooden houses are available for the staff, equipment and basic processing of biological and soil samples. The site has been equipped with a meteorological tower (25 m), which has an automatic weather station with remote on-line data access for temperature, RH, GR, PAR, wind, rainfall. Automatic soil water monitoring stations and below-canopy PAR measuring systems are also avilable. Fine-time-resolution dendrometers and sap-flow monitoring system have been installed for study of canopy trees. For the regular monitoring of species composition and structure of the forest stand a 1 ha permanent plot with four sub-plots was established in 1972.
