It is administered by the Stockholm University, Baltic Sea Centre since 2013, former Stockholm University Marine Research Centre (SMF), an organisation devoted to providing research infrastructure to SU and other interested scientists.\r\nLong term monitoring of the benthic, phytobenthic and pelagic ecosystems funded mainly by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and to a minor part by the Swedish Environment Protection Board and other organisations are located to the area. \r\nOne main objective is to integrate research and monitoring to increase in-house, national and international collaboration to optimize available resources and scientific progress. Other objectives: To detect changes in the pelagic, phytobenthic and benthic ecosystems related to eutrophication and climate change, to improve management practices of coastal and open sea areas.\r\n","citation":null,"relatedIdentifiers":null,"status":{"label":"Operational","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/elter_cl\/10772"},"yearEstablished":1961,"yearClosed":null,"relatedSites":null,"siteName":"Asko Laboratory, Himmerfjarden, Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre (LTER)","shortName":"Asko Laboratory","siteType":"Stationary land-based site","protectionLevel":[{"label":"Category V \u2013 Protected Landscape\/Seascape\/Area","uri":"http:\/\/dd.eionet.europa.eu\/vocabularyconcept\/cdda\/IucnCategoryValue\/V"}],"landUse":null,"images":null},"environmentalCharacteristics":{"airTemperature":{"yearlyAverage":6.6,"monthlyAverage":null,"unit":"\u00b0C","referencePeriod":null},"precipitation":{"yearlyAverage":581.5,"monthlyAverage":null,"unit":"mm","referencePeriod":null},"biogeographicalRegion":"boreal","biome":"marine","ecosystemType":[{"label":"Agricultural","uri":null},{"label":"Coastal","uri":null},{"label":"Forest","uri":null},{"label":"Grasslands","uri":null},{"label":"Marine","uri":null}],"eunisHabitat":[{"label":"Coastal habitats (B)","uri":null},{"label":"Marine habitats (A)","uri":null},{"label":"Regularly or recently cultivated agricultural, horticultural and domestic habitats (I)","uri":null}],"landforms":null,"geoBonBiome":["Marine"],"geology":"Varied softbottoms - from very shallow sheltered muddy bottoms to deep areas partly anoxic. Highly variable. In shallow bays rather rich vegetation of rooted submerged plant species including Characeans. Rocky bottom from the surface to about 10 meters depth covered with a rich algal community typical for the low salinity of the region. The salinity is about 6 psu. Comments: A wide range of typical habitats and ecosystems are found nearby the station, both very shallow and sheltered and open and wave-exposed sites. A national monitoring program has been running since 1992 studying the open water Station BI), the phytobentos and the soft-bottoms. Further the Himmerfj\u00e4rden area has been intensively investigated following effects of sewage pollution. The terrestrial environment consists of mixed temperate forests, pastures and meadows. The meadows have been investigated in a national program and the island is a nature reserve and its surrounding waters are a marine reserve since 2001."},"geographic":{"boundaries":"POLYGON ((17.520184967556 58.387065322128, 17.193850891211 58.634532349074, 17.192924329192 58.635700584038, 17.192696876111 58.635990354083, 17.192487715875 58.636306862749, 17.191711709052 58.637527347181, 17.19098104701 58.63886407056, 17.190165877607 58.640731432678, 17.190055672568 58.640992991329, 17.187116201774 58.654761982513, 17.19219670087 58.66975565227, 17.192931794375 58.670959839369, 17.650347601534 59.183773280703, 17.651629298011 59.184504830022, 17.652728017226 59.184601451954, 18.841708391562 58.923039432455, 18.897321067952 58.909513127336, 18.939020677539 58.883507941852, 18.952175204295 58.862673721961, 18.95218157904 58.862663523064, 18.952179106905 58.862662271718, 18.883178910239 58.828044982359, 18.86948427783 58.821471826997, 18.770013196771 58.780084752817, 18.252652964559 58.573242929186, 18.224278153896 58.562445704444, 18.078523578049 58.518630905144, 17.520184967556 58.387065322128))","coordinates":"POINT (17.599 58.8382)","country":["Sweden"],"elevation":{"avg":5,"min":0,"max":20,"unit":"msl"},"size":{"value":400,"unit":"ha"},"relatedLocations":null},"focusDesignScale":{"experiments":{"design":"partly experimentation","scale":"catchment scale"},"observations":{"design":"mainly observation","scale":"entire catchment"},"observedProperties":[{"label":"biological parameter","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/20940"},{"label":"chlorophyll content of water","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/10088"},{"label":"dissolved nutrient","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/22107"},{"label":"dissolved organic carbon in water","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/10307"},{"label":"ecosystem parameter","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/20939"},{"label":"inorganic nutrient content","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/22137"},{"label":"photosynthetically active radiation intensity","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/22186"},{"label":"secchi depth","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/22226"},{"label":"species turnover","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/22288"},{"label":"water alkalinity","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/10303"},{"label":"water depth","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/22310"},{"label":"water parameter","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/20945"},{"label":"water salinity","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/10308"},{"label":"water temperature","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/22313"},{"label":"water transparency","uri":"http:\/\/vocabs.lter-europe.net\/EnvThes\/10392"}]},"infrastructure":{"accessibleAllYear":true,"accessType":"boat","allPartsAccessible":true,"maintenanceInterval":null,"permanentPowerSupply":true,"operation":{"permanent":false,"notes":"The staff is employed at Stockholm University but have their working place at the field station, the Ask\u00f6 Laboratory, situated on an island south of Stockholm.
