The objective is to monitor the impact of land use changes from annual crops (upland rice, Job\u2019s tear and maize, cultivated with slash and burn system) to perennial (teak trees), and of climate changes upon hydrological and sedimentary fluxes and budgets, along with water quality (including microbial contamination). The mean slope is 48%. Alfisol, Ultisol, Entisol developed on shale and shist. Monitoring devices include an automatic meteorological station, weirs to monitor discharge from nested catchments, suspended sediment, and bedload, piezometers, and electrical resistivity. The stream originates in the upper, mountainous part of the catchment and later becomes a tributary to the Houay Xon, which itself is a sub-tributary of the Num Dong before its confluence with the Mekong River near Luang Prabang.","soils":"Soil distribution from hilltop to valley bottom comprises shallow Inceptisols along the crests, deep, clayey Ultisols (30%) and Alfisols (50%),and poorly drained clayey Dystrochrepts at the foot slopes and along the stream banks. Soil thickness increases from a few tens of centimers near the crests to few meters in the thalweg.","vegetation":"Annual changes in land use were mostly related to shifting cultivation (with slash-and-burn method) from 1998 to 2015, and to the expansion of teak tree plantations since 2009.
