The Romanian Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (580,000 ha) is situated northwest of the Black Sea in Eastern Europe. Four geographic divisions can be distinguished; the Danube Delta, the Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex,the Isaccea-Tulcea sector of the Danube flood plain and the shallow marine waters. \r\nThe Danube Delta is a low alluvial plain, mostly covered by wetlands and water. It consists of an intricate pattern of marshes, channels, streamlets and lakes. The average altitude is 0.52 m, with 20% of the territory below sea level, and more than half not exceeding one meter in altitude. Dunes on the most extensive strand plains of the delta (Letea and Caraorman strand plains) stand higher (12.4 m and 7 m respectively). A sandy barrier blocked the Danube gulf where the river initially built its delta. Upon filling the gulf with sediments, the delta advanced outside the barrier-blocked estuary after 3,500 BC building several successive lobes: the St. George I (3,500-1,600 BC), the Sulina (1,600-0 BC), the St. George II (0 BC-Present) and the Chilia or Kilia (1600 AD-Present). Much of the alluvium in the delta and a major expansion of its surface area in the form of lobes resulted from soil erosion associated with clearing of forests in the Danube basin during the 1st and 2nd millennium.","hydrology":"During the period 1921-1990, the average annual water discharge was 6,570 m3\/s-1 with a mean variation range of about 5,700 m3\/s-1 at the delta entrance. The extreme values were recorded in June 1970 at 15,440 m3\/s-1 and in 1954 at 1,610 m3\/s-1.The highest values quoted in the literature are 17,700 m3\/s-1 in 1958 or even 35,000 m3\/s-1 in 1897. The hydrographic network plays an important role in the appearance,evolution and functioning of the delta system. The main branches and the secondary streams have evolved over time, depending on the neotectonic factors and intensity of the silting processes.According to the most recent measurements (P. Gastescu and Driga,1983) the total length of the natural (or partially modified) streams is about 1,743 km and that of the canals is about 1,753 km.The lakes represent another important morpho-hydrographic feature of the DDBR(Danube Delta Biosphere reserve)landscape. A recent inventory of the lakes within the delta has revealed that before 1980 there were 668 lakes with a total area of 31,262 ha (9.28% of the delta area). Because of the embankment and drainage of the Pardina and Sireasa agricultural polders the number of lakes was reduced to 479 and the area to 25,794 ha (8.06% of the delta area).","soils":"The soil map consists of 41 soil units representing 9 major soil groups; Alluvial Soils, Limnosols or Underwater Soils, Gley Soils,Psammosols and Sands, Solonchaks (including Solonetz), Kastanozems,Chernozems, Histosols and Anthrosols. The prevailing soils are Gley Soils and Histosols, followed by Alluvial Soils and Psammosols. The frequentoccurance of Gley Soils, Histosols and Limnosols emphasize the high value of the area as a wetland.Active pedological data gathering started in the Danube Delta in 1975. The soils of the delta were surveyed on a scale of 1:50,000. The data were entered into a general soil database on a scale of 1:50,000.
