The wetland area is one of the last stretches of the Lazio wetlands which have been progressively reclaimed and cultivated during the last century. The flora and the fauna of the site is not only highly specialized but also highly endangered, with a relevant ecological value evidenced in previous studies. The site includes coastal dune habitats of European interest, as the annual vegetation of drift lines, the embryonic shifting dunes, the mobile dunes with Ammophila arenaria and the dune grasslands. These wet areas, although discontinuous and heterogeneous, have been progressively cultivated, especially in the ?70s of the last century. The wetland develops on clayey-loamy soils, rich in organic plant material, and is separated from the sea by residual flaps of an ancient sandy dune.","vegetation":"The site includes typical vegetation communities of most pioneer habitats close to the sea line, as the annual vegetation of drift lines (EU Habitat 1210), the embryonic shifting dunes (EU Habitat 2110), the mobile dunes with Ammophila arenaria (EU Habitat 2120) and the dune grasslands (EU Habitat 2230). They are often fragmented, so the site is covered by a complex of habitats without a clear separation between them. The site hosts also habitats related to the retrodunal humid depressions, with moderately saline soils, such as the pioneer vegetation with Salicornia (EU Habitat 1310),the perennial vegetation on clayey-loamy soils (EU Habitat 1420) and the Mediterranean jowls of the retrodunal humid depressions (EU Habitat 1410).
