GESS' Research Station (GESS Lab) is located in Mangalia Municipality, in the middle of the sulphurous aquifer of South Dobrogea.
GESS Lab consists of a laboratory mainly equipped for biological studies but very adequate for samples processing/analysis for various other scopes.
In the Station’s yard, there is an underground space with concrete benches and continuous sulphidic water supply meant for Movile Cave simulation experiments.
The Station also has a well equipped conference room where up to 30 people can be easily accommodated. This is a great place to organise workshops, seminars and small-scale conferences as well as any kind of formal and informal meetings.
GESS Lab also has a facility that is used as both field/speleological equipment storage and SCUBA diving base. All the equipment necessary for caving activities as well as SCUBA diving equipment (for samples collected from the sea) are available at GESS Lab or can be provided by the local field team.
GESS Lab can also provide accommodation for a small number of scientists (up to 6) in two dormitories. The fully-equipped kitchen permits to scientists self-catering (the costs of their stay being thus diminished), prolonged working hours and prolonged scientific discussions. High speed internet/wifi service allow for online and hybrid meetings.
The access roads to the site are of very good quality.
In brief, GESS Lab offers the infrastructure for the following services: 1) field work (caving and diving activities included), 2) experimental (laboratory) work and 3) dissemination activities in the form of seminars, workshops and conferences as well as 4) accommodation for the researchers.
Due to the peculiar ecosystem associated to the sulphidic aquifer from South Dobrogea, the international interest for GESS Lab is high. We do have national and worldwide collaborations, as mirrored by the numerous publications on the topic (see the website). Our Lab frequently hosts visiting scientists from around the globe.
