Site Description
The site is located in Clocaenog Forest in North East Wales (53o 03’ 19’’N -03o 27’ 55’’ W). It is a typical upland west-atlantic moorland, dominated by the evergreen shrub Calluna vulgaris (heather). Heather makes up >60% of the plant biomass at the site, but Vaccinium myrtillus and Empetrum nigrum are also present.

Vegetation
Heather makes up >60% of the plant biomass at the site, but Vaccinium myrtillus and Empetrum nigrum are also present. Other plant species present in the experimental plots include:

Vaccinium myrtillus, Deschampsia flexuosa,*Pleurozium schreberii, *Hypnum jutlandicum, *Psuedosclerum purum, *Plagiothecium undulatum, *Rhytidiadelphus loreus, *Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus, *Hylocomium splendens, *Dicranum scoparium, *Polytrichum formosum. Species with a * indicate bryophytes.
Soils
The soil is a humo-ferric podzol. It is variable across the site, with E and Bh (eluvial and illuvial horizons) not always visible. Where apparent, the E horizon is at 6-17cm depth, with Bh below onto parent material.

Was permanently water-logged, now seasonally water-logged.
