Site Description
Treehaven, situated between Rhinelander and Tomahawk, WI, is one of two relocatable sites located in NEON's Great Lakes Domain 5. The Treehaven property is owned and operated by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), College of Natural Resources. UWSP uses the property and conference center for summer field techniques courses but welcomes other educators, researchers, and the public to use and enjoy their forests, trails, and facility. The flux/meteorological tower at this site is 116' with 6 measurement levels. The Treehaven tower location and surrounding tower plots are approximately 1 mile due south of the Steigerwaldt tower and its surrounding plots. Geology
Metavolcanic bedrock, mafic to felsic. Early Proterozoic.
Vegetation
The lowlands of this area consist of mixes of black spruce (Picea mariana) and tamarack (Larix laricina) forests, non-forested acid bog environments, and hardwood and cedar wetlands. The upland sites contain aspen (Populus tremuloides), paper birch (Betula papyrifera), and red maple (Acer rubrum). The upland sites also contain red pine (Pinus resinosa), white pine (Pinus strobus), white spruce (Picea glauca), and balsam fir (Abies balsamea) to a lesser degree than those previously mentioned. Overall, Sugar maple (Acer saccharum), red maple (Acer Rubrum), balsam fir (Abies balsamea), grey alder (Alnus incana), and Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica) are the most dominant species in this site.
