Site Description
The ENGAGE working group (Geomorphological Systems and Risk Research at the Institute for Geography and Regional Research) has been running a long-term monitoring project to investigate landslides in Lower Austria. Landslides (translational and rotational failures, debris flows, rock avalanches, rock falls, etc.) number among the most abundant natural hazards in Lower Austria. Resulting from sporadic phases of activity it is essential to generate specific long-term measurement series, enabling the analysis of changes in surface movements as well as underground in connection with triggering factors. Geology
The Salcher landslide is located in a geologically complex zone in the immediate transition area between the flysch zone, the Grestner cliff zone and the Northern Limestone Alps. The deeply weathered rocks of this area and their high proportion of clay and its weathering products are among the main reasons for the fact that this area has one of the highest susceptibility to landslides in Lower Austria and in Austria as a whole (see, among others, Gottschling 2006; Petschko et al. 2014).
