Site Description
The Niamey Square Degree mesoscale site (Niger) is part of the AMMA-CATCH observation network. Its characteristics are as follows :a 10000 km² endoreic area in sahelian climate. The studies focus on the hydrology of endoric basins and on rainfall/vegetation interactions.

Geology
Two geological formations are found. The East edge of the area belongs to the Iullemmeden sedimentary basin, Continental-Terminal : Mio-pliocene period Pre-cambrian gneisses, schists and granites. The western edge is part of the plutonic Liptako Gourma massif. The latter is part of the West African craton and consists of extensively weathered pre-cambrian. The boundary between the two formations roughly follows the River Niger.
Vegetation
The vegetation cover consists of a patchwork of three distinct basic units : tiger bush on the plateaus, fallow savanna and pearl millet fields on the sandy slopes.
Soils
Soils are essentially of the tropical ferrallitic type, sandy and weakly structured.
Hydrology
Endorheic surface hydrology with small-scale catchments converging to temporary ponds, with no presently active large-scale hydrographic network.
