Site Description
The site is a revitalized young steppe habitat patch, dominated by fescue (Festuca rupicola). The average altitude is around 100 m. The site is a grazing spot and it was recently used for the reintroduction of the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) to the area after 70 years. Other important species present at the site include Vojvodina blind mole rat (Nannospalax (leucodon) montanosyrmiensis) and Spring meadow saffron (Bulbocodium versicolor).

Geology
Quartar sediments forming dunes and inter-dune depressions; loess terraces and river valley along the Kireš river.
Vegetation
A mosaic of woodlands, open shrublands and grasslands i.e., forest-steppe. Forest stands are mostly of anthropogenic origin (black locust, pedunculate oak, black pine). Great structural diversity of plant communities, markedly those that belong to fragile ecosystems, with more than 20 phytocenoses of wetland, meadow, sand, steppe and forest vegetation. Among the preserved natural rarities, a relict forest-steppe saffron (Bulbocodium versicolor) is of particular value. This is the only site in Serbia with this plant species. Remaining natural forests are mostly White and Black poplar poplar.
Soils
Carbonate sands with 87-98% of sand particles by mass, the rest small percentage is clay. The amount of hummus depends on the degree of sand-binding, relief, and humidity, therefore in depressions is more developed comparing to dunes. According to the level of humus content, there are three types of sand: brown, black and loamy black. Small areas are covered by peat and chernozem on sand.
Hydrology
The area is poor in water. The only permanent water body is the Kireš river. Ground water level depth ranges between 2.5 and 5 m, with significant annual fluctuations.
