Site Description
The Pinios Hydrologic Observatory (PHO) covers an area of 53 sq.km and is situated within a complex geological/geomorphological environment with forest and agricultural landscapes dominating. PHO was established in year 2015 with the joint efforts of Agrosphere Institute (IBG-3) of Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany) and Soil & Water Resources Institute of Hellenic Agricultural Organization “DEMETER” (Greece), aiming primarily at developing deep knowledge of water balance at the river basin scale and to improve understanding of the major hydrodynamic mechanisms, thus to improve hydrological modeling and ultimately sustainable water resources management. Geology
The northern, mountainous part of the basin is dominated by fractured formations, while alluvial deposits fill the southern plain part of the basin.
Vegetation
Mixed forests, shrubs and grasslands dominate the northern, mountainous part of the basin. Fruit trees are met in the southern part of the basin, while areas cultivated with corn and wheat are also found.
Soils
A wide variety of soil textural classes are met in the basin. In general, fertile, well developed soils are found in the southern, plain part of the basin, while shallow soils are met in the northern part.
Hydrology
Ephemeral flow is observed in the hydrographic network of the basin. An aquifer system is developed within the alluvial deposits, which serves the irrigation needs of the study area. This system is recharged amongst others, through lateral cross flows originating from the crystalline bedrock weathered zones via transition zones of talus cones and scree developed at the margins of the plain.
