Site Description
Col du Lac Blanc experimental site is located at the Alpe d'Huez ski resort near Grenoble in the French Alps. Col du Lac Blanc experimental field is located around 2700 m a.s.l and is oriented north–south. The area consists of a large surface of relatively flat terrain (about 25 ha). The pass orientation and the specific configuration of the surrounding summits make the pass closely resemble a natural wind tunnel. The north–south direction accounts for 90% of the wind directions. Aeolian snow transport is observed 10% of the time in winter and occurs with concurrent snowfall 37% of the time It has been dedicated to the study of blowing snow in high mountainous regions for approximately since 1989 by IRSTEA (Snow Avalanche Engineering and Torrent Control Research Unit) and Meteo France (Snow Study Centre).

Purpose
The site is primarily dedicated to study interactions between the cryosphere and the atmosphere at high altitudes, with a focus on blowing and drifting snow studies. The site is also used in snowpack modelling studies and as a target site to evaluate Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models
History
The site consist of 4 meteorological stations : Lac Blanc La Muzelle Dome Col During the winter season : The Lac Blanc station measures key parameters for snow studies: air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction as well as snow depth (first measurements 1989) The Dome station provides continuous measurements of air temperature, wind velocity and direction. (first measurements 2000) The Muzelle station provides continuous measurements of snow depth and down welling and up-welling radiations (first measurements 2000) The Col station provides continuous measurements of snow depth, wind speed and horizontal blowing snow fluxes. (first measurements 2008)
